What inspired you to start writing?
I have enjoyed writing since elementary. I remember writing simple poems that rhymed or something for my mom and dad.

Can you tell us a little about your latest book?
BE is a collection of my poetry and prose that I have written during my life over many decades. There are haiku, tanka, and my verses and prose about nature, love, heartache, war, Hawaii, and social issues.
I am proud to state my poetry book was recognized as runner-up in the New York Book Festival, London Book Festival, and the Great Northwest Book Festival. BE received an Honorable Mention at the Los Angeles Book Festival and the San Francisco Book Festival.

How do you create your characters?
Characters are created through my mind and my experiences.

What does your typical writing day look like?
Coffee, newspaper, CNN, caring for and living with my 91 year old mom who is very sharp & active, light exercise, dog & cat care, sometimes painting, sometimes writing, yard work, television series, advocacy, resistance

What has been the most rewarding part of being an indie author?
Independence is not overrated. Answering to one's self is great. Being in control is the best, but never fear seeking advice, suggestions, or assistance.

What’s one challenge you’ve faced in your writing journey?
I believe marketing, advertising, and promotions are the most challenging items for independent writers. Some options are free like social media, and some cost money which many authors don't have.

What advice would you give to new or aspiring indie authors?
Explore all areas of your mind. Utilize your imagination. Don't hold back. The world wants unique and new content. Don't give up. It won't be easy, but it will keep your mind active.

How do you handle book promotion as an indie author?
Most of my book promotions have been through social media. I have used Instagram, Facebook, Linked-In, Bluesky, and X. Book signings at various locations are helpful as long as you promote them on social media.

What’s next for you? Are you working on a new book?
I'm still figuring out my next written project as I am also planning art pop-ups for the holidays.
My next written project will hopefully be my 3rd novel, a poetry book with other poets, or a screenplay.
