From There To Here- John Nkata's journey from Malawian soccer to the American Dream

  • What inspired you to start writing?
I wanted to forewarn the people of my homeland, Malawi, who wish to chase the pursuit of a dream that they hope to achieve but are misinformed of what that expectation entails. Also, my experience holds a mirror to the true reflection of the American face towards immigrants who want better for themselves and their families.
  • Can you tell us a little about your latest book?
In search for hopeful opportunities, an African soccer player is lured to the United States. What he finds is, purpose and the fact that the American Dream is only for some, for others, it’s a nightmare. Every immigrant has a story. This is my truth, told in reflection of the path that led to, not only my daughters, but my entire family experienced turmoil.
  • How do you create your characters?
Well, this book is a memoir, so the characters already existed. This book focuses on the character of real people. What they are really made of.
  • What does your typical writing day look like?
I’m a research person, so a typical writing day for me is reading and asking questions.
  • What has been the most rewarding part of being an indie author?
Learning what writing a book entails. Knowing what to do and how to do it is truly rewarding.
  • What’s one challenge you’ve faced in your writing journey?
The feeling that this was a goal that was too big to reach. Writing a book was unfamiliar to me. Now, thinking about this question, I’m realizing that this type of challenge is exactly what my book is about.
  • Do you have any favorite writing tools or apps?
Apps, not really. This being my first book, my favorite tool is my friend who edited and held my hand through the entire process. I’m very grateful for him.
  • What advice would you give to new or aspiring indie authors?
Keep writing, no matter what. Don’t rush the process. Let the emotions flow as you write, because this is the spice of your words. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
  • How do you handle book promotion as an indie author?
I listen to my friend who already has experience in this area.
  • What’s next for you? Are you working on a new book?
At this moment I’m just focused on getting the word out for this project.
