Inside the Mind - E.E. Williams

  • What inspired you to start writing?
Reading as a kid. I always dreamed of writing the kinds of books that captured my imagination. I was a city boy who grew up on a farm because my dad wanted to experience living in the country. Given that our nearest neighbor was miles away, I was alone much of the time and books were my only real friends.
  • Can you tell us a little about your latest book?
It's about a former teacher named Paul Schneider who has a checkered past and is accused by a corrupt police detective of kidnapping the little girl he sometimes babysat. Without proof that Schneider has done anything wrong, the local media and his entire neighborhood turn on him. He quickly loses his reputation, but unless he can prove he's innocent, he'll lose much more than that. His freedom and possibly his life. Because there's a killer loose in the community and he'll do anything, including murder, to keep his own past hidden.
  • How do you create your characters?
I often base them on people I know or have met, though most of them aren't killers. I don't think, anyway.
  • What does your typical writing day look like?
I write in fits and starts. But I'm always writing. When I go to bed at night I'm writing dialogue and scenes in my head and when I wake up, I pick up where I left off. Sometimes the writing flows and I can put in several hours a day at the computer. Other times, I'm lucky to write for five minutes.
  • What has been the most rewarding part of being an indie author?
Having people read the book and like it.
  • What’s one challenge you’ve faced in your writing journey?
I like the writing. I like having written. I don't like the marketing. That's been the biggest challenge for me.
  • Do you have any favorite writing tools or apps?
No favorites. I use Microsoft Word and an Apple MacBook Air.
  • What advice would you give to new or aspiring indie authors?
Be prepared to do a whole lot of work after the manuscript is finally finished.
  • How do you handle book promotion as an indie author?
    I don't and that's a problem.
  • What’s next for you? Are you working on a new book?
I'm writing the fifth, and likely last, entry into a mystery series featuring amateur detective, Noah Greene.
