Inside the Mind - James Lingard

  • What inspired you to start writing?
Leading law publishers invited me to write a textbook on Bank Security Documents - a subject in which I was an expert. This book is now in its 7th edition.
  • Can you tell us a little about your latest book?
The Girl Who Disappeared is closely based on what happened to my parents during World War 2. Chapters before I was born are based on family hearsay - hence the reason the book is fiction.
  • How do you create your characters?
I base them on real people I have met.
  • What does your typical writing day look like?
I tend to write in the afternoons but make a note of thoughts which occur to me when they occur.
  • What has been the most rewarding part of being an indie author?
To see a book of mine in print.
  • What’s one challenge you’ve faced in your writing journey?
I tend to plan out a story in note form before starting a book and so avoid writers block.
  • Do you have any favorite writing tools or apps?
A blue notebook with pages it is easy to tear out.
  • What advice would you give to new or aspiring indie authors?
Plan a book in note form before writing it.
  • How do you handle book promotion as an indie author?
Promotion is difficult. I create a one page blurb and circulate it as widely as possible.
  • What’s next for you? Are you working on a new book?
Early days. I am still at the notebook stage.
