Inside the Mind - Jeffrey McClain Jones

  • What inspired you to start writing?
I’ve always been fascinated by storytelling, even as a child. I started writing short stories in notebooks and never really stopped. Over time, it became a way to process my thoughts and connect with others through words.
  • Can you tell us a little about your latest book?
Sure! My latest book is a mix of personal reflection and fiction. It explores themes like resilience, loss, and self-discovery through the lens of a character who is trying to make sense of their past. It's deeply personal but written in a way I hope many people can relate to.
  • How do you create your characters?
Most of my characters are inspired by real people or emotional experiences. I usually start with a personality trait or a conflict, then build their background and motivations. By the time I start writing, they often feel like people I know.
  • What does your typical writing day look like?
I usually write in the mornings when my mind is fresh. I try to dedicate a couple of uninterrupted hours daily. Some days are more productive than others, but I treat writing like a habit more than waiting for inspiration to strike.
  • What has been the most rewarding part of being an indie author?
Definitely the creative freedom. I love having full control over the direction of my stories, cover design, and how I connect with readers. Plus, the indie community is so supportive and inspiring.
  • What’s one challenge you’ve faced in your writing journey?
Self-doubt. Like many writers, I sometimes question whether my stories are good enough. Learning to trust the process and keep writing anyway has been a big part of my growth.
  • Do you have any favorite writing tools or apps?
Yes! I use Scrivener for organizing longer projects and Grammarly to polish up my drafts. Sometimes I’ll also use Notion to plan out characters and plot arcs. And of course, a simple notebook never fails when inspiration hits on the go.
  • What advice would you give to new or aspiring indie authors?
Don’t wait for perfection. Just start writing and finish your first draft. The magic happens in revision. Also, connect with other indie authors — the support and encouragement go a long way.
  • How do you handle book promotion as an indie author?
I try to be consistent without being pushy. I share behind-the-scenes content, connect with readers on social media, and make sure my books are listed on sites like IndieAuthorNet.com to reach a wider audience. Word of mouth and genuine interaction are key.
  • What’s next for you? Are you working on a new book?
Yes! I’m currently working on a sequel to my last novel. It’s still in the early drafting phase, but I’m excited about the direction it’s taking. I’m also outlining a non-fiction project focused on mental health and creativity.
