Inside the Mind - Cynthia Dawn

  • What inspired you to start writing?
    Reading. It has always been one of my favorite past times, and after years of reading just about everything I could get my hands on, I decided I wanted to try it myself. I started out with short stories, and eventually gravitated to novels. Long series are my favorite reads, and that is why I now work on the EthiaVerse. It's fun creating a large epic world.
  • Can you tell us a little about your latest book?
    Right now I am working on Hidden Empires. It's the fourth book in the Adar saga, and it's main focus is him being presented to the Empire as the Emperor's successor. It's been a lot of fun bringing Adar into the Empire. Someone who grew up on Earth, not knowing that he was heir to an Empire. We get to see the Empire from his point of view as he slowly makes this major identity change.
  • How do you create your characters?
    Honestly, I think the character create themselves. As the story progresses, new characters sort of just appear as if they were just waiting for me to find them. Usually, I have an idea of what kind character I need for the story plot, I then play around with the name a little, and slowly the rest of the character starts to come alive. It's an amazing experience, and one of the more fun aspects of writing.
  • What does your typical writing day look like?
    Well, lately my writing time has been all over the place. I have new responsibilities that have come up that take up a lot of my day, so I write when I can get it in whether that be middle of the day or very late at night. I get a time slot that's free, and I grab my computer and write may heart out for as long as I can. So far it's been working. I'm getting my writing in, and that's what matters the most. I get cranky when I can't write!
  • What’s one challenge you’ve faced in your writing journey?
    Just one? LOL... I would say that the biggest challenge for me has been learning how to be a consistent writer. For years, I struggled with writer's block. Sometimes I could write, and sometimes I would not be able to for weeks or months. I have learned several techniques over the years that's helped with this. One of them was finding one big story I could tell and focusing on that. Now I have an abundant source to write on, and that has helped me a lot!
  • Do you have any favorite writing tools or apps?
    Scrivener is my best friend! I love using it because it helps me keep my sprawling stories organized. I can also easily create epub or pdf files as needed. I also use Writing Pro Aid for editing my stories, and that has been an extremely useful tool.
  • What advice would you give to new or aspiring indie authors?
    Write for fun! Write for yourself! And don't get bogged down with negative reviews or criticism. At the end of the day, you have to like what you write, or what would be the point of writing at all.
  • How do you handle book promotion as an indie author?
    Still working on this, but I am finding that it's an ongoing process of getting out there and talking about what I'm working on with as many people as I can.
  • What’s next for you? Are you working on a new book?
    I am always working on a book, and have an idea for the next book. That's the beauty of working on the EthiaVerse. After Hidden Empires, I plan on starting up Rebel Captive. I also have a short story idea for a side character I'd like to get into if I ever find the time.
