Inside the Mind - Dan McCrory

  • What inspired you to start writing?
In fifth grade we were studying myths and legends. Our teacher, Mr. Robinson, challenged us to come up with our own myth or legend. He was so impressed with mine he read it to the class. I was hooked.
  • Can you tell us a little about your latest book?
My latest two, one published, one not have a common thread running through them despite the fact that one is fiction and the other is nonfiction. We both illustrate the injustices done to indigenous people and the anger that inspires. The fiction Worst Case Scenario: Election Night is out, Leonard Comes Home is looking for a caring agent and publisher.
  • How do you create your characters?
My characters are strong because they must carry the story. I'm not a plotter, I'm a pantser trying to keep it real and drive the story. Whenever I paint a character into a corner, I say, "Come on. Get yourself out of this."
  • What does your typical writing day look like?
I live in my office, just ask my wife. I can see the difference in my writing. I get into my office at about 9 am and come up for air about 1 pm. Then, after lunch, I'm back into the story till dinner time.
  • What has been the most rewarding part of being an indie author?
Rewarding? Not much. Maybe having someone appreciate one of my books. Comments like, "This should be in every high school in the country!" warms the cockles of my heart.
  • What’s one challenge you’ve faced in your writing journey?
Scams and all the clever ways con artists have designed to take somebody's hard-earned cash.
  • Do you have any favorite writing tools or apps?
I use final draft for my screenplays, just Word for my stories, books, and poetry.
  • What advice would you give to new or aspiring indie authors?
Find a lane and stay in it. Your final destination is more likely to be compatible with your journey and the road to public recognition is that much more inevitable.
  • How do you handle book promotion as an indie author?
My wife always treats me like a street corner whore, but the books isn't going to sell itself. I have stumbled across some amazing artists, including my brother, who has finally awakened to his income potential.
  • What’s next for you? Are you working on a new book?
I'm working on a TV series, a script from my first book. I have to finish my nonfiction book about Leonard Peltier.I have two plays I have worked on occasionally. I have a series of books called the Seven Swords of San Simeon. And I'm also working on two sequels to my first published book, Capitalism Killed the Middle Class.
