Can you tell us a little about your latest book?
My latest book, Teenage Runaway, takes you back to the raw, rebellious heart of my generation. We were caught between an illegal and immoral war and attempting to build a new, more humane culture we, that is some of us, called Woodstock Nation. This is a real-life memoir of escape, survival, and the unrelenting pull of freedom.
-
How do you create your characters?
They are real characters, people I describe as best I can, who were part of my experience.
-
What does your typical writing day look like?
Early morning, I'll coffee up and spend a few moments to bring myself back into Zeitgeist of the era I'll focus on. Then I let my fingers do the walking until I'm spent. More coffee or a stroll around the block refreshes me to edit, and perhaps rearrange what I've written. There will be several cycles of this process, broken up by my other daily life demands until I'm satisfied it is ready to show others and editors.
-
What has been the most rewarding part of being an indie author?
Getting a readers appreciation.
-
What’s one challenge you’ve faced in your writing journey?
Having enough time to focus and fitting it into my often busy life.
-
Do you have any favorite writing tools or apps?
Spellcheck and Thesaurus on Word. There are days--and nights--when the right word eludes me, and it may take multiple reviews before I'm satisfied that it conveys what I want to say.
-
What advice would you give to new or aspiring indie authors?
Write what is most meaningful to you. If you are not turned on, you are wasting yours and the readers time.
-
How do you handle book promotion as an indie author?
Still learning as I go.
-
What’s next for you? Are you working on a new book?
Yes, number 5 in a series, should be out this year by autumn.
