What inspired you to start writing?
I was eight years old and the hovercraft had just been invented. I wondered if they could be used to explore new planets we may find with hostile environments.
So I wrote my first science fiction story, 'Planet A for Acid.'
-
Can you tell us a little about your latest book?
'Midnight's Crisis' is the fourth book in 'The Midnight Series' of nine novels about the wartime adventures of Jessie Fordham, SOE (Special Operations Executive) agent Midnight. It's due for release in December 2025.
-
How do you create your characters?
My character names simply pop into my head and they develop their traits and characteristics as I write. By the time I get to the sixth draft, they are usually fully developed.
-
What does your typical writing day look like?
5am start, a 1,000 words written. Coffee and breakfast followed by another 1,000 words. A break for lunch and a bit of a nap. Then another 1,000 words in the afternoon.
But there is no such thing as a typical day for me. I usually wing it!
-
What has been the most rewarding part of being an indie author?
To know people have read my novels and actually liked them.
-
What’s one challenge you’ve faced in your writing journey?
Time. Since the kindle first came out I've been an indie author, but it took a lot of time to write my first book, about eight years. Now I'm more confident, I can rattle out the words pretty quickly.
-
Do you have any favorite writing tools or apps?
I've always used MS Word. That is my go to for writing. For formatting, Atticus is second to none.
-
What advice would you give to new or aspiring indie authors?
Never give up. You have a dream. Follow it. Don't be put off by anyone, especially friends and family.
-
How do you handle book promotion as an indie author?
Ah, marketing. The bane of my life. But it has to be done. I've had over 20k books downloaded, so I must be doing something right... I wish I knew what it is I'm doing correctly.
-
What’s next for you? Are you working on a new book?
I'm working on a nine book historical fiction series and when that's finished I'll be doing the same, but based in Tudor England.
