What inspired you to start writing?
I was inspired by my two daughters when they were young to write about what I believe are things that matter for children...how to set a goal, work towards a goal, how to build confidence, believe in yourself, and basically know that you are loved and have the strength and courage to go after your dreams and become the person you want to be.

Can you tell us a little about your latest book?
My latest book, Ella's Journey, is about a young girl who feels a bit lost not knowing how to get from "here to there" and questioning what it takes to succeed in life. She's greeted by a mystical figure in a dream who takes her and her dog Bo on a journey of discovery, learning about four key pillars that can help build character and lead to a joyful and fulfilling life.

How do you create your characters?
My characters were inspired by each of my daughters when they were young learning to ride horses and as they grew thinking more about what might be going through their minds as they begin to chart a course for their life. I believe every child can relate to these aspects of life, whether it's learning a new skill, feeling maybe "less than" at times, or different, and just trying to maneuver through the challenges life presents.

What does your typical writing day look like?
It's not regular, and pretty much somewhat sporadic when I'm in-between books. But when I get an idea that I think is worth pursuing, I make a little time each week or every other week noodling on the idea and writing out potential concepts that then become a story line with characters. It starts with a concept that grows with a story line to support key messages I want to share with children, whether it's to make them laugh, make them think about themselves and their lives, or relate to the character or characters in a story to share as message that they may hold on to for a long time.

What has been the most rewarding part of being an indie author?
Having children and adults appreciate my stories, even if it's just a handful a people who connect with the stories and appreciate the foundational messages shared.
-
What’s one challenge you’ve faced in your writing journey?
Staying with it and maneuvering the "landmines" an author may come across figuring out how best to put a book together, finding the right publisher, the right way to publish, or using marketing companies that are above board and aren't just out to take your money. Also, trusting that what I have to say through my stories are topics parents and children will find interesting in a colorful and fun way.
-
Do you have any favorite writing tools or apps?
No.
-
What advice would you give to new or aspiring indie authors?
Do your homework. Look out for aggressive companies that may not truly have your interests in mind. Trust in your writing skills and seek support from skilled writers who can review your work and offer candid and valuable feedback. But trust your gut and write what feels right to you.
-
How do you handle book promotion as an indie author?
Through book fairs, live readings at libraries and bookstores, and visiting schools to provide copies of my books in their school libraries. I even did a video interview that was shared extensively through social media outlets.

What’s next for you? Are you working on a new book?
I am considering a small series with a character I came up with a couple of years back.
